Pier 21 is a historical landmark for Canadian Immigration. From 1928 to 1971, almost one million immigrants started their Canadian journey at Pier 21.

Timeline

  • 1928: Pier 21 Opens, Nieuw Amsterdam landed with 51 immigrants

  • 1931-1938: Welcomes 16,000 new immigrants per year

  • 1944: Fire forces Pier 21 to relocate offices to Pickford and Black’s Wharf

  • 1944: Pier 21's Annex is built, relocating offices back to Pier 21

  • 1946: Pier 21's second storey immigration quarters opens

  • 1953: Expansion of Office space allowing social services to relocate closer to the Pier

  • 1968: Only 12,000 immigrants arrive by sea at Pier 21

  • 1971: Pier 21 Closes due to decrease influx of immigrants by sea
