Sponsor or be Sponsored by a family member

Sponsor your relatives, including your spouse, partner, children, parents, and grandparents, to immigrate to Canada.

Your relatives can live, study, and work in Canada if they become permanent residents of Canada. You can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada if you’re at least 18 years old and are a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, reside in Canada, and have financial proof to provide the basic needs for the person you are looking to sponsor.

Sponsoring a spouse or family member is a long term commitment. When you apply to sponsor a relative, you swear to provide financial support to your family member for 3 to 20 years.

See the requirements to sponsor:

Sponsoring Your Spouse, Partner or Child

The basic requirements to sponsor your spouse, partner or child are:

  1. Be over 18 years old,

  2. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident,

  3. Reside in Canada,

  4. Be able to prove you have not received social assistance for any reason other than a disability,

  5. Make sure they do not need social assistance from the government, and

  6. Be able to provide for the basic needs of your partner or spouse.

In addition to these requirements, your spouse must agree that they will make every effort to be able to support themselves and any dependents.

In some cases, you do not need to meet an income requirement unless your spouse or your child has one or more dependent children.

Sponsoring your Parents or Grandparents

The basic requirements to sponsor your spouse or partners are:
